Remote Consultation

Making decisions about your healthcare is one of the most important choices you will make. Orthopedic conditions can significantly affect your quality of life, as knee or shoulder pain can make everyday activities such as walking, reaching for items on a high shelf, or even sleeping difficult. Whether your goal is to return to normal daily activities, participate in recreational sports, or perform at an elite athletic level, it is essential to be well-informed and carefully consider your treatment options.

When should I consider a remote consultation?

You might be questioning whether you are a candidate for a specific procedure or treatment, or you may be seeking a second opinion about an existing diagnosis or injury. Consulting another physician can be very beneficial—it allows you to confirm a diagnosis, explore alternative treatment approaches, or identify details that may have been missed in an initial evaluation. Seeking a second opinion is a common and accepted practice, and most physicians understand and support this decision..

How do I request a remote consultation?

Dr. Crall, Dr. Gilmer, and Dr. Karch specialize in knee and shoulder evaluation and treatment, and would be happy to provide evaluation and treatment options, whether it is an initial evaluation or a second opinion. An appointment can be made either by calling our office or by contacting us online. Our Mammoth Lakes office can be contacted at (760)924-4084 and our Bishop office can be contacted at (760)872-7766.

If you are not a resident of the Eastern Sierra, please contact us and then send any medical records and images pertaining to your injury to our office at:

Mammoth Hospital Orthopedics
85 Sierra Park Rd
Mammoth Lakes, CA 93546.

Upon receipt of your records we will review and contact you within 1-2 business days.

Do I need a referral?

In a vast majority of cases, no referral is needed.

What is the cost of a remote consultation?

An initial review of your records and a phone consultation is performed without charge. If you proceed with seeking care at Mammoth Hospital, standard medical costs apply.

Most insurance plans are accepted at the Mammoth Hospital. However, if you have an HMO insurance plan, you will need special approval from your insurance company prior to an in-person appointment or surgery. Out of pocket costs will vary, depending on your insurance plan.

What if surgery is required, but I do not live in the area?

The need for surgical intervention can often be evaluated by thoroughly discussing a history of the injury and symptoms, reviewing the medical records, and reviewing the imaging studies. If surgical intervention is decided upon and you would like to proceed with surgery here in Mammoth, an appointment will be made prior to surgery to meet your surgeon in person to perform a detailed examination and review your records. Much of your follow up care can be done remotely, your results are tracked with an online database, and a referral to a physical therapist local to you can be made.

In most cases, surgery can be performed on a same day (outpatient) basis. Patients are encouraged to remain in Mammoth Lakes for 1-2 days to ensure a smooth transition. In most cases an early postoperative visit with your team and/or physical therapy occurs within 1-2 days after surgery and prior to you returning home to review instructions, and ensure your comfort and safety.

As we have many visitors here in the Mammoth Lakes area, we are experienced in treating patients who do not live locally.
