Biography

Tom Nigro, Jr. has traveled an unconventional path toward practicing anesthesia- and wouldn’t have it any other way. Originally aspiring to be a chef, Tom found himself playing collegiate soccer before working as a vector control intern during peaks of both the West Nile and H5N1 viruses. When he determined that a career in public health research was not for him, he worked in restaurants while completing an additional degree. During that time, he honed his talents in international triathlon, qualifying for the Olympic trials. This qualification closely coincided with the loss of a loved one to substance use disorder, which inspired his doctoral research.

At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Tom seized an opportunity to provide care in New York City. While there, he practiced as an interim critical care attending provider in Brooklyn and remains deeply grateful for the many selfless practitioners with whom he worked during that time. Tom also served as Chief of Anesthesia for Advanced Anesthesia Services in Washington State, where he was integral to developing AAS into the strong regional presence it is today.

Tom aims to provide an excellent perioperative experience at Mammoth Hospital through careful examination of patient needs and the use of progressive anesthesia techniques. He is also an Executive MBA candidate at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management.

When not providing anesthesia, Tom can be found working to improve his novice skateboarding, surfing, SUP, ski and snowboarding skills- and sharing his craft as a pizzaiolo. Both Tom and his wife, a nurse and internationally published photographer, find harmony in community and are excited to be part of the town of Mammoth Lakes.
