A Village of Support: Meryn's Story

Meryn's First Christmas - 2025

When Ryder and Renée, ski school instructors at Mammoth Mountain, decided to start a family, they never imagined the journey ahead would test them so profoundly. After five years of fertility treatment and loss, the joy they felt during a healthy pregnancy was deeply cherished. But within minutes of their daughter Meryn’s birth, that joy turned to fear when she showed none of the typical newborn reflexes and was rushed to the NICU.

What followed was a week of agonizing uncertainty as her parents waited for answers, navigating Father’s Day unsure if they would be able to bring their daughter home to the Eastern Sierra. Eventually, advanced genetic testing revealed a rare muscular myopathy. While Meryn’s long-term prognosis remains unknown, the most important answer was clear—she was going to grow up.

During those early days, the family was reminded of the strength of their community. A friend encouraged them to apply for Rhiannon’s Kids support, reassuring them the program existed for families exactly like theirs. That moment brought tremendous relief, offering both emotional and financial support at a time when everything felt overwhelming.

After a month in the NICU and another month traveling to see specialists, the family continues to travel for ongoing care. Rhiannon’s Kids has remained a steady source of support, easing the financial burden and allowing Ryder and Renée to focus on Meryn’s health. Through the program, they continue to feel the strength of a community walking alongside them.

Today, Meryn is thriving in the mountains, surrounded by a loving community. The family credits Rhiannon’s Kids and the generosity of its donors, including Volunteer Eastern Sierra, Mammoth Mountain and Waste Connections, for helping make it possible to come home, stay home, and keep moving forward together.

Meryn’s story is a powerful reminder that when a community comes together, families don’t just endure, they heal. Rhiannon’s Kids continues to ensure no Mammoth family walks this journey alone.
