Published on February 22, 2026
Nearly a decade after a family trip to the Eastern Sierra, Russell Black was reminded of a life-changing moment of care at Mammoth Hospital. While cleaning out a closet, he found a note with the name of a physician who had helped him during a medical emergency, sparking a wave of gratitude.
During a visit to Tuolumne Meadows with his young son, Russell became seriously ill after a hike. Two physicians recognized the signs of a heart attack and helped get him to Mammoth Hospital, where Dr. David Araya confirmed an acute cardiac event and coordinated a medical flight home so Russell could receive surgery closer to family. “I was treated with such clarity, patience, and respect,” Russell recalls.
Years later, Russell reached out to the hospital to ensure all of his bills had been settled and once again experienced the kindness that left a lasting impression. Today, he is active and healthy and has chosen to give back in honor of the caregivers who made a difference.
Russell’s story reflects the heart of the Mammoth Hospital Foundation’s Moving Mountains Grateful Patient program, which offers patients and families a meaningful way to express gratitude and help ensure exceptional care for others.
