Steve Kirtland, MD, Chief Medical Officer

Dr. Kirtland was born and raised in San Jose, Ca. He attended the University of California, Davis, where he received a BS with honors in Zoology. After pursuing research endeavors in the Division of Neuroendocrinology at the National Institute of Health, he obtained his medical degree from the University of California, San Diego. He then completed an internal medicine residency and chief residency at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle, Washington followed by a pulmonary and critical care fellowship at the University of Washington.

After a brief 2-year venture in private practice in Eugene, Oregon, he returned to Virginia Mason where he has practiced for the past 30 years. In addition to his clinical practice at Virginia Mason, Dr Kirtland has served as Medical Director of the Cancer Institute, Critical Care Unit, Respiratory care, as well as serving for 12 years as their Chief of Staff. Outside of Virginia Mason, he has been active in many medical organizations serving as the President of the Washington Thoracic Society, Chair of the Council of Chapters of the American Thoracic Society, President of the Pacific Chapter of the Undersea and Hyperbaric medicine society, and medical director of the Washington State Respiratory Care Society. He is board certified in Internal medicine, Pulmonary medicine, Critical Care medicine, Sleep medicine and Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine. His major clinical interest over the past 20 years has been in interventional and navigational bronchoscopy and lung cancer.

Dr. Kirtland and his family have always had a love for the outdoors. He grew up skiing in the Tahoe basin but has spent the last 40 years hiking, camping, and skiing in the Pacific Northwest. His wife, Cindy, holds a Master of Divinity from Fuller Seminary. She recently retired from her 25-year tenure as Director of Spiritual Care at Virginia Mason Medical Center. Dr. Kirtland and Cindy are blessed to have 2 happy and healthy children and 3 grandchildren (with 2 more on the way) all living in California. Dr. Kirtland and Cindy will be splitting their time between Seattle and Mammoth.
